This summer, the Association of African American Museums (AAAM) will issue the first comprehensive directory of African American museums in the United States. The directory is one result of a national survey funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) through its Museum Grants for African American History and Culture program (AAHC). The survey will also be used to produce a report that will guide professional training and development activities for African American museums nationwide, according to Shirl Spicer, Secretary of AAAM Board of Directors.

The request, which was delivered to Congress today, represents an increase of $24,102,000, or 9.8 percent, over the FY 2006 enacted level. IMLS, like most federal agencies, is operating under a continuing resolution (CR) that maintains FY 06 levels and expires on February 15. A year-long CR for FY 2007 is currently under consideration in the Senate.

The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) today announced that 72 organizations will receive grants to support Big Read programs between January and June 2007. The Big Read is a new national program by the NEA, in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and Arts Midwest, that encourages literary reading by asking communities to come together to read and discuss one book.

The Maine Memory Network, a digital museum launched by the Maine Historical Society in 2001, is a centralized online gateway to Maine history. Supported by an IMLS Learning Opportunity Grant, this project provides Maine's cultural organizations with the resources they need to share images and items from their own collections, while also training teachers, students, and community members to help them research, prepare, scan, and upload historic materials from their own communities.

In honor of Constitution Day, IMLS features a project from the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia.
